SCIENCE

KS3

Aims

At KS3, students experience science in a way which is interesting, exciting, intellectually stimulating and relevant to the students ’ present and adult lives.

The Science Department aims to provide all students with a broad and balanced view of science with subject matter that includes physics, biology, chemistry, geology, astronomy, meteorology, electronics and technology.

Key Stage 3 Science

The National Curriculum for science divides the content, skills and processes which must be taught to children into 4 main areas or Attainment Targets.  These are:-

  • How science works

  • Life and living processes

  • Materials and their properties

  • Physical processes

At KS3 students follow the Oxford scheme, “Science Works”. Students work is continually assessed often jointly by staff and students . Assessment can take the form of traditional tests or tasks designed especially to assess students Progress.

The final level of attainment for KS3 will be the summation of these assessments.

KS4

Combined Science GCSE AQA 8464

The new Combined Science Trilogy course introduces the students to the key scientific principles that they will encounter in their everyday lives and teaches them how they work and what they mean to them as an individual and to society as a whole. The course not only teaches the students the theory of the fundamentals of science but also equips them with the practical science enquiry skills to carry out a range of investigations, gather useful data, analyse it and make conclusions based upon it.

Topics Covered:

The Combined Science course covers a wide range of topics which may be broadly grouped as follows:

Biology—The study of living things, their evolution and the environment they live in

Chemistry— The study of the elements, how they react and how we use them

Physics— The study of forces and energy, the rules that govern them and how they affect us.

Assessment:

The final assessment of this course consists of six papers:-

Two biology

Two chemistry

Two physics

Each of the papers will assess knowledge and understanding from distinct topic areas. During the course the students will be regularly assessed via Checkpoint tests and weekly homework.

Course Progression:

This course can serve as the gateway to ‘AS’ and ‘A’ Level science studies in Biology, Chemistry and Physics.

Careers:

Many and varied! All areas of Medicine and Health Care, Forensic science, Research and Development, Engineering, Environmental Health, Bioinformatics, Nanotechnology, Science teaching.

Triple Science GCSE BIOLOGY AQA 8461/GCSE CHEMISTRY AQA 8462/GCSE PHYSICS AQA 8463

The Triple Science Pathway explores the key scientific principles of Biology, Chemistry and Physics that students will need if they wish to have a greater understanding of how Science affects individuals and society. The subject matter is covered in greater depth, breadth and detail than in the Combined Trilogy course and is best suited for those students with an ability and interest in Science.

Topics Covered:

Biology - The study of living things, their evolution and the environment they live in.

Chemistry - The study of the elements, how they react and how we use them.

Physics - The study of forces and energy, the rules that govern them and how they affect us.
