Transition 2020 - 21

Firstly, on behalf of Turves Green Boys’ School, I would like to welcome you and your family to our school community; we are looking forward to officially beginning our journey together in September 2020.

It is strange to be communicating with you about Transition in these unprecedented times and how the Transition journey to Turves Green Boys’ is going to have to adapt and look different this year. Typically, I would have already started going to primary schools, meeting lots of excited and curious Year 6s and having in depth discussions with their teachers as well as finalising the plans for our Induction Day – sadly, this has not been able to happen!

Transition to secondary school is one of the biggest and most significant changes in a child's life, which is why at Turves Green Boys’ School we place the upmost importance on getting it right to ensure all of our new Year 7 pupils are happy, safe, motivated and primed to be the best that they can be.

Our approach to transition consists of a bespoke programme of events that is tailored to enable all new pupils to feel the warm welcome Turves Green Boys’ School offers and to develop an awareness and application of key attributes that make a good learner. We look to hone core values such as being ready, responsible and respectful. We help to grow pupils who are bold, creative, unafraid to take risks in their learning, believes in their abilities and demonstrates resilience no matter the challenge in front of them. Our aim is to instil these skills in our pupils from the very beginning so that they can go on to be the best that they can be. Moving to a new, often much bigger school can be a daunting experience and the first few weeks can be an anxious time for both of you. Anxieties are sometimes apparent at home, but please be reassured that this is quite normal and that your child is in experienced, sympathetic hands.

Now, it’s fair to say this year’s Transition journey is going to be different to any other, with COVID-19, social distancing and school closures. Whilst schools throughout the country have been forced to modify their traditional Transition events, we at Turves Green Boys’ School are confident we will offer the best, most meaningful Transition that we can in these circumstances.

As transition lead, I would like all pupils to complete a short task, the TGBS Passport to Year 7. This information will provide me and your teachers with an insight into you as an individual prior to your arrival in September. Alongside this, staff members within each department have created a transition video introducing their subject. Within each video that can be found in the Meet Your Teachers section, there is an exciting task to complete; a bake-off challenge in Design & Technology, the opportunity to become a published poet in English, a number challenge in Mathematics and much more. Whilst it is not compulsory to complete all of the tasks, we do encourage pupils to have go as we will be rewarding those who submit their efforts via email to For the best pieces, awards will be presented to pupils during a Celebration Assembly in September. The deadline date for submission is 21st August 2020.

Over the next three weeks, I will be contacting all parents/carers to touch base, introduce myself and discuss the plans for September. In meantime, please do not hesitate to contact me should you have any queries, questions or concerns.

Kind regards,

Mr Rogers.

Virtual Tour

One of the best ways to get to know a school is to visit. Unfortunately, due to COVID-19 restrictions we are unable to host visits to school at this current time.

We are however delighted to be able to share with you a number of photos taken when our school was in full operation. We hope this gives you a feel for what you can expect when you join us in September.
